About the Exhibition

I’ve been challenged by the concept of home for most of my life. This exhibition represents a continual evolution of my understanding of home as it is shaped by internal processes, and experiences that happen on the outside. I had a rare and amazing opportunity to travel to several different countries in recent years (2015-2019), some of these countries were France, Morocco, Ireland, Wales, England and The United States. These travels and cultures have shaped my perception of home having stayed in many (stranger’s) homes and connected with people from different cultures and backgrounds.

A pop up exhibition felt like the right way to show a selection of my artworks as I dance between style and subject exploration in movement towards a series. I see it as a bridge between where I’ve been as an artist and where I’m going.

My experiences of these places and people were transformative, challenging and informative. At the same time I was grasping for a feeling of personal belonging and identity. In hindsight, I travelled to see sites, extend my education and for the pure joy of naive escapism, but I also travelled in an attempt to experience something incredible and terrifying that my soul was calling for. I was busting out of the bubble I was familiar with in Australia, and awakening. My travels became an emotional and spiritual search for truth and in the messiness of all of that I made a lot of art and did a lot of writing. The works that are included in this exhibition are drawings, paintings and mixed media images that were made in Airbnb’s, friends homes, hostels and studios, where I stayed and worked during my travels.

I’ve questioned where home is geographically and I’ve questioned where it is inside me. I now understand the phrase, “home is where the heart is”. The internal weather goes with you to the grocery store, to pick up a morning coffee, heck it will follow you to Marrakech and Belfast! For the longest time I couldn’t see that trying to get home from the outside in was creating avoidable pain and suffering. I travelled searching for home, I travelled searching for love and I travelled because I was hollow. I questioned my privileged life, my upbringing, being white, being a woman, being Australian, being human, existence, everything. I had a proper late 20’s existential crisis, thankfully I survived and landed wiser than before, with more to bring to the table.

A pop up exhibition felt like the right way to show a selection of my artworks as I dance between style and subject exploration in movement towards a series. I see it as a bridge between where I’ve been as an artist and where I’m going. Some of these works are aggressive, some are intricate and detailed, some were made with ecstatic energy and total bliss. Some are dark, some are colourful, some are about beating through the hum-drum of a busy anxious mind, some are about having compassion for self and loving the messiness of it all. A handful of ink and pen drawings are personal and I share them with vulnerability, but essentially they are an acknowledgment and acceptance of negative feelings and emotions. There is plenty of coloured works, landscapes and animal portraiture, to balance it out!

I hope you enjoy this peek into my journey to understanding home.
